A very warm welcome to Culgower House, B&B accommodation near Brora and Helmsdale on the scenic coast of East Sutherland in the north Highlands of Scotland. An ideal base from which to explore the north Highlands and a perfect stop on your way to Orkney or whilst touring the North Coast 500. Open March to October each year.
house - Culgower House is a Victorian farmhouse, built around 1850, set in its own grounds, with hills behind, glorious views out over the Moray Firth and beaches within walking distance. A beautifully refurbished family home with local textiles, original art and a mix of antique and contemporary furniture. A tranquil, rural, Highland home with warm hospitality. We welcome assistance dogs, but are unable to accommodate pets.
rooms - Just two individually styled bedrooms with king-size beds, sea views, fresh flowers, touches of local tweeds, great linens, their own bathrooms with large baths and separate, walk-in showers and organic, local toiletries. Guests have the use of an inviting sitting room with a piano and a wood burning stove for cooler evenings. There are plenty of books, board games, suggested day trips and local tourist information; Catriona and John are always happy to help you plan your days so you can make the most of your time in the area. We also have private parking, a drying room for wet clothing and equipment, a boot room for secure storage of bicycles and free wi-fi throughout the house.
food - We welcome guests with home baking and tea / coffee in the afternoon, and offer a delicious breakfast to set you up for the day; we are delighted to hold VisitScotland's Taste Our Best award. Breakfast is prepared using as much local produce as possible, including vegetables, fruit and herbs from our garden, eggs from our hens and homemade breads and jams. We can also provide tasty packed lunches if requested in advance.
There is a good range of eating out options in nearby Helmsdale and Brora for the evening; alternatively we offer a small selection of light suppers which can be pre-booked.
your hosts - We returned to the highlands in 2003 and have had great fun, and a few tears of frustration, restoring the house and garden to their former glory. We look forward to welcoming you to our home and sharing with you the wonders of this very special part of the Scottish Highlands.
